Before undergoing a dental implant procedure, it’s important to understand the process from start to finish.
Your treatment will be divided into five steps: Diagnosis and planning, surgery and temporary placement, healing, final restoration, and aftercare.
Of all these steps, your postoperative aftercare is the most important and you must closely follow your dentist’s instructions.
Immediate aftercare
After your procedure, it will be important to avoid extreme environments like outdoor heat, direct sun, and rain exposure.
You should avoid exercise and lifting weights, and try to stay as calm as possible and speak slowly and quietly.
If you experience pain, you can massage the muscles around your mouth and take pain medication as prescribed by your dentist. You can also apply ice packs to the affected area to relieve discomfort.
General aftercare
There are other steps to take in the days following your procedure.
Try to choose cold or icy foods and liquid or soft meals. After eating, use a cotton swab with an antiseptic to clean the surgical area to remove any remaining food.
You should return to your normal eating habits gradually, and don’t forget to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
Your oral hygiene routine is very important, too. You should use a post-op toothbrush to brush the area, but avoid touching your gums. Don’t forget your tongue! Brush your tongue to keep it clean. You can floss, but avoid flossing the surgical area.
At night, try to sleep with your head raised above your body, and lie face up, or on the opposite side of your surgery site. It’s important not to put pressure on that area while you sleep.
Your teeth after the procedure
Following all these steps will help to ensure success.
Your ability to chew will improve considerably once you are done healing and will work just like a natural tooth. You’ll gain a new, beautiful, and natural smile.
